The Mystery of Henry Joseph Ziegemeier

US Navy Rear Admiral Henry Joseph Ziegemeier, shows up in my geneology research quite often. Since Ziegemeier is an uncommon name, and we do have a Henry Joseph Ziegemeier in our family tree, it makes sense that the Admiral is a relative. However, I cannot find a link to him in our tree. Here is what I have found in my research and a comparison to the two Henry Joseph Ziegemeiers.

My great-grandfather, Franz (Frank) X. Ziegemeier had a twin brother, Henry Joseph. The twins were born January 25, 1857 in St. Peters, MO to James Ziegemeier and Margaretha (Gertrude) Naff. Franz married Philomena Schuette, and they made their home in St. Charles, MO. Henry Joseph married Annie Wolke in 1882 and they moved to Morgan Co., MO where they show up on the 1900 census with the spelling of their last name as Ziegenmier. Annie passed away on July 27, 1904 and is buried in the Smithton Cemetery in Pettis Co., MO. Henry then married Ellen M. Potter. Henry was buried in the Smithton Cemetery, presumably with Annie although the tombstone does not have his name inscribed in it, but Henry's death certificate states that he was buried there. Ellen was buried Otterville, MO. Their last name is spelled Ziegenmier on the tombstone. However I believe this to be our relative due to matching birthdates and family lore telling of a relative who "moved west" to Sedalia.

Now Admiral Henry Ziegemeier has a lot on-line about his military career, but nothing about his parents. What I have found is as follows:
Henry Joseph Ziegemeier (the Admiral) was born March 27, 1867 in Alleghany, PA. He died on October 15, 1930 in Washington state and was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, CA. He died at the Naval Hospital on Puget Sound, WA while serving as Commandant of the 13th Naval District and Commandant of the Navy Yard, Puget Sound, WA. At the time of his death, he was married to Jewell.

From my research I came across Bill Fickinger's website. Here I found that Henry was married to Ida Wernet in 1895. The 1930 census taken at Washington State, Kitsap Co. Navy Yard, Puget Sound shows Henry married to Jewel H. who is 20 years younger than Henry. The census also shows Jewel was 32 y/o at the time of her first marriage and Henry was 26 y/o at the time of his first marriage, showing that Jewel was Henry's second. Wife. Henry and Jewel had a 6 year-old daughter named Rosemary who was born in DC. Henry's mother-in-law, Rose V. Riding, 76 y/o was also living with them.

In trying to find the names of Henry's parents, I found a 1920 census record. This shows the following:
Joseph Ziegemeier age 75 born 1845 in Germany. Lived in Canton Ward 1, Stark, OH on 8th Street NW, House #828. He immigrated in 1866. Joseph was married to Frederica. They were both naturalized. Living with Joseph and Frederica was Robert H. Fickinger 24 y/o - hence the connection to the Bill Fickinger's website. Frederica was 75 y/o born in 1845 in Germany.

I was not able to find a census record showing Henry living with Joseph and Frederica, but may come across something with time.

However, there are no links to our Ziegemeier line that I have found so far. Since Admiral Henry Joseph was born in PA and our Ziegemeier family were born in Missouri, it is unlikely that there is a link, unless our immigrant ancestor, James (Joachim) Ziegemeier and Adm. Henry's parents are related back in Germany.

I am not definately certain of the date of immigration of James, but I believe it to be around 1845, and Joseph was born in 1845 in Germany. If these 2 are related, they never met.

To determine a link would require some international research, and I haven't gotten to that yet.

I hope you have found this story interesting. The story of our Henry Joseph Ziegemeier is rather interesting in itself, and still needs some in-depth research to get hard records verifying dates and names.

Crume Family

I have accumulated the most information in my family tree from my maternal grandmother's family line on her mother's side. We go back to the 1500's in one family - which I will post about later. Today I'll post the family tree on the CRUME family. Much of this information I gained from other family members (cousins) who are also researching the CRUME family.

Once again, follow the (+) signs for the direct links between family members. I include the spouse with each as is known.

Magdalena Husser

Magdalena Husser is my maternal great-grandmother. Like most of this side of the family, she is buried in Saints Peter and Paul cemetary in St. Louis, MO. One day I will  make a trip there to see the burial sites. Mom tells me that most of the headstones are written in German or Bohemian. I don't have any stories about Magdalena, so here is the tree as I have found it so far.

James Harrison Morgan

Great-grandfather, James H. Morgan has been somewhat of a mystery for me in my geneology research. I've been looking for his background - his parents and siblings - every since I started researching the family tree back in the 1990's. He didn't seem to have a past. But with some luck and a little help from Aunt Jerri and Uncle Al, I was able to trace him through his brother, Winter Schwartz Morgan. Winter was listed in the 1900 census living in Ft. McKenzie, WY military base as a Pvt., born in Rockport, IL. That gave me a location to search prior census records for the rest of the family.

Here is the MORGAN tree as I have it so far:

Susan G. Ziegemeier Loftin
    +James V. Ziegemeier b. Nov. 17, 1930, St. Charles, MO d. Feb 15, 1997
      Mary J. Nemec b. Jan. 11, 1933 St. Louis
             Albert J. Ziegemeier Sr. b. Apr. 29, 1902, d. Oct. 5, 1970
             +Nellie Delora MORGAN b. Jan. 16, 1905, d. Oct 29, 1960
                        +James Harrison MORGAN b. dec. 6, 1874, IL; d. Feb 25, 1925 Lincoln Co., MO
Nellie Mae Crume b. July 4, 1880, Troy, MO; d. Nov. 29, 1951 Troy, MO
                                    +Daniel MORGAN b. Oct. 22, 1844 Pike Co., IL; d. Oct 1, 1886 Rockport, IL
                                       Matilda Smith b. Mar. 25, 1845; d. June 1, 1912, IL
                                             +John D. MORGAN b. abt. 1806, PA; d. IL
                                               Laura b. abt. 1817, NY

I found an interesting bit of information about the cemetary where Daniel and Matilda are buried - Bald Bluff Cemetary. You can read an article about the cemetary here. It is dated 2005 and I don't know if there is any updated information about it at this point in time.

Kluepple Family Tree

My maternal grandmother was Josephine Kluepple (Klueppel), and here is the Kluepple family as far as I have traced it as of this date. Once again starting with me and going backwards into the ancestry.

Ziegemeier Tree

Before things get too muddied, I thought I should write the family tree as I have it now. I'll start with the ZIEGEMEIER family line with my name and going back in time.

Susan G. Ziegemeier Loftin b. Oct. 13, 1958, St. Charles, MO
   + James Vincent ZIEGEMEIER b. Nov. 17, 1930 St. Charles, MO, d. Feb. 15, 1997 Springfield, MO
Mary Jane Nemec b. Jan. 11, 1933, St. Louis, MO
+Albert Joseph ZIEGEMEIER Sr, b. Apr. 29, 1902 St. Charles Co., MO d. Oct. 5, 1970 St. Charles,     MO
Nellie Delora Morgan b. Jan. 16, 1905 Lincoln Co., MO d. Oct. 29, 1960 St. Charles, MO
          +Franz X. ZIEGEMEIER b. Jan. 25, St. Peters, MO d. Mar. 9, 1935 St. Charles, MO
Philomena Schuette b. Nov. 6, 1865 St. Peters, MO d. Dec. 26, 1928 St. Charles, MO
+James (Joachim) ZIEGEMEIER b. abt. 1824 Hanover, Germany
                    Gertrud b. abt. 1826 Switzerland

Gertrud is someone who is confusing me as I also have information that has James as being married to Margaretha Naff b. 1824 Switzerland, d. 1895 St. Charles Co., MO. Marriage date is 1853 in St. Peters, MO. I don't know if James was married twice or if Gertrud went by more than one name. Or it is possible that I have 2 different James' confused. There are several James Ziegemeiers floating around in ancestry trees and census' and it gets very confusing.

Census Records Show:

1860 Dardenne Township, St. Peters, MO
            James Ziegemeier 37 y/o b. Hanover, Germany married to Margaret 35 y/o b. Switzerland
                Children listed: John 8 y/o b. MO
                                          Batiste 13 y/o b. Switzerland
                                          Gertrude 5 y/o b. MO
                                           Frank 3 y/o b. MO
                                           Henry 3 y/o b. MO
                                           Joseph 1 y/o b. MO

Note: if the marriage date of James and Margaretha is correct as 1853 and in MO, then Batiste is either a brother of James' or his son by a previous marriage, or..... I haven't been able to find Batiste in any other census records.

1870 Dardenne Township, St. Peters, MO
         J. Ziegemeier 49 y/o b. Hanover, married to Margaret 46 y/o b. Switzerland
           Children listed:  John 18 y/o b. MO
                                      Gertrude 16 y/o b. MO
                                      Henry 13 y/o b. MO
                                      Frank 13 y/o b. MO
                                      Joseph 11 y/o b. MO
                                      Elisabeth 3 y/o b. MO

1880 Dardene Township, St. Charles Co., MO
         James Ziegemeier 56 y/o b. Hanover, married to Gertrud 54 y/o b. ?
             Children listed: Gertrud 25 y/o b. MO
                                        Henry 23 y/o b. MO
                                         Frank 23 y/o b. MO
                                        Joseph 21 y/o b. MO
                                        Elisabeth 13 y/o b. MO
                                        James 9 y/o b. MO

James Ziegemeier drops off the census records after this as far as I can find. My on-line source of census records apparently doesn't have the 1890 census for St. Charles Co., MO.

However, the 1900 census lists Frank Ziegemeier 44 y/o living with wife Minnie 34 y/o and have been married 5 years. Minnie has had 6 children with 3 surviving.
    Children listed are: Ottmar b. June 1888 1 y/o
                                    Frank b. May 1899  1 y/o
                                    Leo Algermissen (step-son to Frank) b. Apr. 1888 12 y/o

1910 Census Portage Des Sioux Township, St. Charles Co. MO
Frank Ziegemeier 52 y/o married to Philomina 44 y/o living on Doland Road.
        Children listed: Ottmer 14 y/o
                                   Frank 10 y/o
                                   Albert 8 y/o
                                   Idella 4 y/o
                                   Sylvester 1 y/o

So if anyone can help me clear up the Gertrud/Margaretha mystery I would love to hear from you. I would also like more info on Batiste Ziegemeier if possible.

I am also trying to find when and where James and Margaret/Gertrude immigrated to the U.S. It is believed by family story that they came in at a Louisiana port, but I don't know when and can't find them on any ship registry that is available to me.

I will add on to this tree in future posts, focusing on a particular family name at a time. Nellie Delora Morgan's family has several branches that I have traced back as many as 13 generations. That will be for another day's posting.

Enjoy!
